On Hans Gordon’s Blog

I am a psychologist, a lecturer and a writer. When I was young I had dreams about becoming a private investigator – a detective. And so I became, but not within the police or law enforcement. Instead I am today a curious behaviour scientist, trying to find out and to understand as much as possible of all dynamics going on in the mind of the Human Being, and all underlying events that happen in between people when they meet and when they create groups and organizations. This is a continuous expedition into the internal worlds of people in different cultures. As a psychologist I have specialized in the vast field of Aviation and Marine psychology, and I have today quite extensive experiences of how people act and think within the medical service in a modern society. Key words are awareness of responsibility, judgement and principles of safety. I live and work mainly in Stockholm, Sweden.

  2. How is good pilot?

  3. hi hans gordon. I never met you before, but I want to ask you about pilot selection. New SIAP team, they seem do not care about people that prepare a lot with a tuter. There are many special school that help thai people to find a last year test. For example for aptitude test or even with computer test, they will know what going to be appear on the screen for the next question, and also some Captain help them by telling them why they fell from last time by using professor`s report. So do you think new SIAP team they are professional enough for this? How to prevent from this? One last question, maybe you do not like this question. Many airline in the world not using professor test, but they use Wechsler(WAIS) and 16PF or EPPS and combine with Simulater check. If they want to see how high discipline of the people. They can see from the check. Simulater check will also tell every thing about this, for example deliberate working style or impulsive working style or good team work or planing ahead. For me ,I think that peole can learn and gain experience to be something and going to be the best of themself. Every one have to start from the beginner.Just like you ,now you are professional but I believe you are a beginner before. So do you think someone already have some flying skill, should go to simulater check? I think it better to use only pure psychology test. Because as you can see now many people pretend to be someone but not themself and go for psychology test. You are professional in this way ,Do you have any comment about this? Best regards.

i am a lawyer . i have one relative that want to be a pilot. his father separate form his mother for a long time.his mother is my sister. i know you because one of my freind advice me to write to you.my relative he want to be a pilot but he graduate from communication . is it difficult for him to be a pilot. but the big problem is he like to modify his car .his car look beautiful and have a good car audio he said it look smart for him anyway i agree with him .sometime he drive a car so fast and he want to be a pilot because of this. so how to stop him to spend a lot of money to his car and how to stop him to drive fast.do you think he drive a car so fast because his father separate from his mother.so he have to do something to compensate from this.anyway i appreciate that he want to get a good job as a pilot .it is a good job and good welfare and good for his future. but i donot want him to have an accident. do you have some advice to me to teach him to stop that. and how they can prepare for the mathmetics. anyway his gpa is not so bad but he is not an expert for mathmetics when compare with an engineer.

  6. Dear Supakij,
thank you for commenting on my blog.
As I have never met your relative it is very difficult for me to give you a complete answer, but here are anyhow my reflections about what you are telling me:
I don´t believe that your relative drives fast cars because his father separated from his mother. This could not be the only explanation of his behaviour. He sounds very young at heart, lite a teenager who wants to check the approved limits. And a commercial pilot job is very far from “driving fast”. A good pilot must have a very high self discipline, which means that he has to have developed into a grown up maturity with a sound judgement. The primary goal for a modern airline pilot is to bring all passengers safe and sound to their destinations. It has nothing to do with fast actions. It is much closer to what is expected by a medical doctor or a lawyer: to act precisely with a very good judgement. And this requires a lot of general intelligence and an ability to reflect and to understand a lot of what is going on around oneself.
It is not necessary to be so very good in mathematics, but he has to have a basic knowledge of calculus.
There are so many tales about young pilot trainee candidates that they have to be very good in solving different psychological test problems, but it is even more important that they have learned to think and to act as grown up individuals, where they do not just look for any enjoyments for themselves, but where they care for other people as well.
I do not know how you can stop your relative from getting involved in an accident, but a very good pilot trainee candidate should always think of driving his car as quite a risky business. Driving slowly is better than driving fast. The main thing is to reach the destination in a safe way, may it take ten minutes more than if you step on the pedal.
Try to make him understand that he will not win any victories in life by behaving like a “wild teenager”.

Several Flying Training Schools in USA are somewhat cheaper than the corresponding schools in Europe or in Australia, mainly because the US Schools have flight instructors that are very low paid. But otherwise, you are right: the living costs in USA are quite high. I can´t give you any other advice than check around on the Internet, comparing the prices. But let your relative do that by himself. I guess that he is the one that wants to attend the school, not you. Tell him to search the web and to come up with some suggestions of different schools. And ask him how he has planned to pay for this kind of training. This would be a good exercise for him in his growing up career.
    Regards
    /Hans Gordon
